nikki-and-smiles Nikki and Smiles enjoyed some cuddles. Nikki is the light brown sable ferret and Smiles is the albino. Can you tell where one ferret ends and the other starts? They are sleeping in a hammock in their kennel.

lousy-photo-of-jared-painting My sisters got me a present for my 40th birthday. They signed the three of us up for a painting class. We had wine and cheese whilst we sat around a table painting, with the occasional help of a teacher. It was fun. All three of us drew some kind of an animal. Amy, the artist in the family, did a bird. Sara, the youngest, painted a horse.

A fellow at my kids' co-op asked me if ferrets make good pets. I answered him with the standard spiel of "most families shouldn't have ferrets," ... Then, I had an idea.

My veterinarian said my lab was allowed to eat all the green beans he wanted, and Valor sure did love his green beans.

Why Ferrets?

My husband tolerates my dogs, but he doesn't like them. He wasn't interested in birds, and he flat out didn't like my cat. Yet, every time we went to the pet store, we oohed and ahed at the ferrets like they were babies. I had ferrets fiften years prior, and I wasn't that interested in having more. But he giggled and smiled around them.

So, we adopted two ferrets. Then he found the local ferret community and we became active in it. Next thing I knew, my kids and I were cleaning poop at the shelter, taking in hospice cases, and adopting the occasional weasel that tugged at someone's heart strings.

We've probably had twenty ferrets pass through our house since then. The original two have passed. One suffered a tramatic accident and the other died of an early onset, very aggressive adrenal tumor. They are forever in our hearts, and the new guys keep them forever in our minds.

And yes, they do stink. You learn to either ignore it or like it.
