At KL College of Agriculture, part of KL University, learning extends far beyond classroom learning. Recognized among the top universities in Vijayawada, the college recently gave its students a chance to roll up their sleeves and see science at work in the real world. Two field engagements brought classroom knowledge to life, leaving lasting impressions on both students and local farming communities.
The first visit took students to the Andhra Pradesh Rice Research Institute (APRRI) in Maruteru. There, they witnessed the painstaking journey of rice varieties, from the earliest breeding decisions to crops ready for the farmer’s field. Under the guidance of institute scientists, students observed parental line selection, controlled pollination, and generation advancement from F1 to F6. Evaluation trials such as OYT, PYT, AVT, and MLT revealed the rigorous processes behind variety release, while students also explored high-yielding, disease-resistant types and learned about Integrated Farming System (IFS) applications.
Their second engagement brought them closer to farmers in Nutakki village. As part of the Principles of Integrated Pest and Disease Management course, 146 students and five faculty members conducted interactive sessions on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and safe pesticide use. Farmers learned pest identification, crop monitoring, and sustainable IPM techniques, including intercropping, resistant varieties, and biological controls. Students also demonstrated proper storage, disposal, and first-aid measures for pesticide use. Farmers actively participated, asking questions and sharing experiences, a lively exchange that highlighted the real-world impact of scientific knowledge.
These experiences do more than teach technical skills. They inspire responsibility, curiosity, and confidence, showing how research can transform communities.
Through initiatives like these, KL University continues to stand out among the top universities in Vijayawada, shaping professionals ready to innovate and promote sustainable practices across the agricultural landscape.
